Joe and I have been together since he was a Junior in high school (8years) and have been married for almost 5 years. We have worked very hard to provide our children with a home and were finally able to get out of government housing about 2 years ago when we assumed the loan on my aunt and uncle’s house. We qualified for the Kansas weatherization program last year so our home is warmer then it was last year, but we still worry about being able to pay for heating.
Anyway, we aren’t lazy or freeloaders. We were both working full time and (barely) paying our bills each month until my work said they couldn’t afford to keep me. Instead of looking for another minimum wage job, I enrolled in college. I am making a 3.8 GPA and will graduate in 2010.
Because my husband only makes $9.00/hour, we have been falling behind on all of our bills by about $150 each month. We haven’t been able to make the minimum payments on any of our credit cards (we’ve been thankful to pay our mortgage) and now they have been canceled and turned over to collections. We cant pay the amounts they want us to pay for the payment plans they have offered (which is more than our minimum payments were) and they are adding late fees and over the limit fees each month.
We are now on food stamps, WIC, Medical (for the children), and we qualified for LIEAP, but none of these agencies help pay bills. We were told that because Joe works full time, we cannot qualify for cash assistance. I was so desperate to help pay our bills, that I started filling out online surveys for .50 each. We don’t have money to try any of those crazy on-line schemes.
If you have any real suggestions that can help our family before we end up losing our home and having to return to government housing, we’d really appericiate it! Thanks for your time.
P.S. We have considered joe joining the military, but we decided that it wasn’t the right choice for us. We have a TON of respect for the men and women who are brave enough to risk their lives for our wonderful country, but we decided we would rather be poor and have each other than to have money and take the risk of our children growing up without their father.
We have made several smaller sacrifices though, like getting rid of our Dish TV. We have started doing most of our shopping at our church’s thrift store, ALDI’s, and Wal-Mart for the rest. We have even started making our own laundry soap. We heard about those people who auctioned all of their property to pay their medical bills and we thought about selling some of our belongings to make ends meet, but then we realized that most of our stuff was bought second hand and then it has been through three children. We wouldn’t even donate most of our stuff because is has been through so much, we could never sell it. LOL

Making an application where there is no chance is a bad idea, because every inquiry shows up on your credit score also.

I pay a 13.99 percent interest rate on my car, and the loan was for 72 months. I have 4 years left on the loan, and am 3 months ahead. When I bought the car my credit score was below 600 now its slightly above 700, and I just recently purchased a home in September, and have a pretty decent sized savings account in the bank. I thought I was in a position to knock the interest rate down a little , and perhaps push up the maturation date, but when I put in the online app to refinance, it came back dissaproved. Would it be easier to call the bank and ask them to lower the interest rate for me, or should I apply for refinancing somewhere else, I dont like the idea of doing that becuase I am afraid of having to many inquiries?

In a nutshell… 3 years ago I had to come up with 25000 dollars in medical bills. I didn’t make enough to really cover them so I took out another loan to help pay for the difference. The only reason I took out another loan was because my company at the time kept promising me big raises. My boss was fired a little later on, but then it sucked for me because by then I was in huge debt. I have no college degree and self studied to get myself into the position I was in. It also didnt help that I helped my parents out because I lived with them almost my whole life and gave them 1000 a month in rent. My 3 older siblings got into huge trouble and my parents took out every penny they had to pay for their expenses, and promised to help me financially. Well turns out my parents cannot help me out because they dug themselves deeper than I was. Well zip forward 4 years and I am in huge debt and will take me about 3 years to get myself back on track, but I am confident my plan will dig me out.

Now I moved out a year ago and lived on my own, but recently moved back in with my parents because living on my own really sucked. I never had anyone over and never went on any dates. So I moved back home and am paying rent, although not nearly as much as before. My situation really sucks, and the last 5-6 dates I have been on, it never got past the first date because they end up hearing my situation, or at least part of it, and run. I really want to find a girlfriend, even though it just seems like the worst time. I have been waiting for 7 years, and it will be years before it gets any better and I do not want to waste any time.

Any tips for me? I have tried online dating sites extensively over the year and had no luck. Even tried meeting people out in public, and that is even worse. I do not drink alcohol nor do I really like being around it so I rarely go to bars. Everyone that really knows me, understands my situation and believe it should not stop anyone from dating me, however I beg to differ. Maybe it is all in my head? I don’t know. When I meet a girl, I just want to tell her everything because I hate trying to hide things. But that is hard because when I mention, for instance, I live at home with my parents, I almost kinda have to explain everything because unless you know the whole picture, it just doesn’t sound right.
