Can I get a home equity loan on a property I own in Canada, if I’m an American citizen?

Kymimom asked:

I own, (thru an inheritance) a cottage/home in Ontario,Canada.
Where can I go to get a home equity loan on it?
I own the property out right and only pay yearly taxes on it.
Althought the property is in good shape,I would like to do some improvements on this property so I can rent it out year round.
Any Ideas or suggestions?
I’m an American citizen - Michigan and this is an Ontario, Canada ( 5 streets from Lake Huron on Ipperwash Beach) Property.

It depends on what lending company you want to use. Some banks have branches in other countries you will have to shop around for the best interest rates… call your bank first see what they say.

You have to go to a Canadian Bank for your loan.
It should be no problem if you have a good credit rating.

Any bank will be happy to give you that Home equity loan which is called here in Canada as home Equity Line of credit. Therefore your credit rating must be clean and your monthly income could cover up that amount you desire to borrow. However, the banks here do not tell you about that Home Equity Line of credit unless you ask them cos they are after mortgaging in most banks here. With HELOC, you are bound to pay the interest only and if you want to decrease the accumulating interest every month..you have to pay some for that Capital . HELOC is calculated monthly and it’s based on your amount of money borrowed from the bank. The interest implements on the present interest rate therefore you’re not looking for a fix rate because you are being billed from the current rate during that billing date monthly.
    Hope this helps.
